The Midwest Speed Quest is all about the newest form of Windsurfing Competition: GPS Speed Sailing.
Read the 2010 Race Announcement HERE. THIS EVENT IS FREE! Even the GPS is provided! Your results will be uploaded to gps-speedsurfing.com. Your Speeds will be listed with the fastest sailors in the world!
This is a friendly competition designed for beginners to even the most experienced windsurfers. This is a great opportunity for the newer sailors to learn from the Pros. We have lots of great demo gear provided by the finest manufacturers in the world!
In this event, YOU decide when you race. Click on the Weather Forecast button. Pick the windy day that fits your schedule. Just let us know when you are arriving, and we will meet you on the beach with a GPS unit ready to go.
We will also have a number of scheduled Race Days during the season. On these days we will serve a free Hot Lunch and Cold Refreshments on the Beach! This is a great opportunity to meet fellow windsurfers.
Speed Sailing is exciting for Spectators too. Guests are always welcome to mingle with the Windsurfers! Come on down and find out more about Windsurfing. Bring your camera and binoculars too.
Each year we award over Two Thousand Dollars CASH to the fastest windsurfers on Lake Okabena! See the “Rankings” Page for the complete list of Racers 2005 through 2009.
We are willing to recognize the following categories if there is sufficient interest (at least 3 applications per category).
1) Youth Category
2) Women's Category
3) Formula Category (95+ cm wide)
4) Hybrid/RSX/Prodigy Category (under 360 cm in length, with a dagger board)
5) Long Board Category (over 360 cm in length)
New for 2010, there will a 500 Meter Alpha Racing Category. This is an event where your best average speed is measured through a jibe. This sounds complicated, but is really quite simple, and is easily calculated by the GPS Speed Software.
We want to reward those racers who have excellent technical skills on the Race Course. This is a unique way to rank the Racers on their jibing ability.
For 2009, the Top Alpha Speed was recorded by Ed Melechson of Omaha with a speed of 19.06 knots.
New for 2010, we will recognize GPS Kiteboarding as a Speed Sailing Category. Cash and Prizes to be announced! During the Season, there will be a number of days designated specifically for this. Speeds shall be measured by the "Best Ten Second Interval".
